Infections, Inflammation and Immunity (I3) Division: Infectious diseases themed seminar

The seminar will include presentations from two recently completed National Insitute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded multi-centre randomised clinical trials (the BATCH and PRONTO trials) within the research area of exploring the clinical and cost effectiveness of point-of-care Procalcitonin tests (PCT) to aid clinical decision-making for appropriate antibiotic stewardship for patients with suspected sepsis/severe bacterial infection.

The focus of the BATCH trial was to determine whether the PCT test would reduce unnecessary further antibiotic treatment in children admitted to secondary care, without adversely affecting mortality. The focus of the PRONTO trial was to examine if a PCT test at triage in the Emergency Department could reduce antibiotic use in adult patients presenting with suspected sepsis, without adversely affecting mortality.

The trial teams will present the key findings from both trials and implications for future research in this area.

This event is being organised by the Centre for Trials Research, for more information contact the team.
