British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Research Conference

For 30 years, the BACP Research Conference has been a place where researchers and practitioners gather together to exchange ideas on important research findings, presented in open discussion with constructive critical debate and helpful dialogue. The conference fosters a climate where all are welcome to share learning and network with other delegates.

Over this time the conference has been attended by representatives - both presenters and delegates - from 23 countries, making it a truly international event.

BACP is delighted to announce they're accepting abstract submissions. The theme of the conference is ‘Impact through collaboration’ and will be co-hosted by University of Manchester.  

They welcome abstract submissions from all methodological perspectives and all theoretical orientations, from students, practitioners and experienced researchers alike. 

Submissions addressing the theme of collaboration are particularly welcomed. They're also keen to highlight inter, multi or trans-disciplinary research relevant to counselling, psychotherapy or coaching.  

They accept submissions for: 

  • Research Papers: 30-minute session presenting counselling/psychotherapy research you have undertaken. 
  • Discussions: 30- or 60-minute session presenting research-related work, such as an overview identifying issues and questions relevant to counselling and psychotherapy research or a review of research literature. Methods workshops: 60 minute session aimed at introducing a particular research or analysis method relevant to counselling & psychotherapy, providing opportunities for practical and experiential learning.
  • Lightning Talks: 10-15 minute slot presenting early development work of a research project. 
  • Posters: A visually eye-catching format to present your research, plus a 1-minute platform presenting your research to the conference and an online exhibition slot. 
  • Symposiums: 90-minute session providing 3-4 presentations (plus an overview) on a particular theme or subject in counselling and psychotherapy research.

Research awards

They are also accepting submissions for BACP’s Outstanding Research Award and BACP’s New Researcher Award. 

The Outstanding Research Award aims to aims to: reward excellence in counselling and psychotherapy research; increase awareness of the evidence base of counselling, psychotherapy and its guiding principles; improve the overall quality of counselling and psychotherapy research by example and; encourage and inspire future research in counselling and psychotherapy.  

The New Researcher Award considers submissions from current full-time or part-time registered students, or those who have graduated in the last 24 months. Submissions may be co-authored (e.g. with a research supervisor) but you must be the first author and a previously unpublished researcher in our field at the time of submission for the award.
