Findings of the Social Workers in Schools Trial

The world’s largest randomised control trial of secondary school-based social workers was conducted in 21 local authorities in England over the course of two academic years Sept 2020 – July 2022.

Led by CASCADE (Cardiff University) in collaboration with the Centre for Trials Research and Oxford University, the SWIS trial evaluated the effectiveness of placing social workers physically in schools on the need for children’s social care services. The trial compared social care outcomes between schools with and without an embedded social worker. The research also included a comprehensive implementation and process evaluation which explored how SWIS was implemented and the experiences of those involved, in addition to an economic evaluation.

Despite being well received by school staff, students and social workers alike, the intervention did not result in the intended changes to social care outcomes and was not cost effective, hence SWIS was not recommended for continuation.

This webinar will present and discuss the headline findings of the SWIS trial, hosted by CASCADE researchers David Westlake (lead investigator), Dr Verity Bennett and Dr Phil Smith.
